What makes me me?

I’ve been helping people learn since the turn of the century. I always feel old when I say that.
I’ve been working with people of all ages, in a broad variety of things. It was in 2003 that I first started working with children, when I spent a while teaching in a school in the Peruvian Andes. It made me realise that although we are all incredibly unique, people the world over have similar hopes, dreams, and aspirations.
I also love music, and as a bass player I have performed in various bands at bars, club, and festivals around the UK and Europe. Music and travel – a magical combination!
Running is another great hobby. I run to clear my head (as well as offset middle aged spread). The pinnacle of my running career was completing the New York Marathon.

What inspires me?

Knowing that the choice is not “do I want to make a difference?”; rather, the choice is “what difference do I want to make?”. Everything we do (and everything we don’t do) will make a difference to someone or something.
An example of this is recycling – by recycling, we can have an impact on our environment. But if we choose not to recycle, then that will also have an impact. So, I ask myself, given the choice, what impact would I want to have? That choice will determine the actions that I take.
And so it is true in all aspects of life. We are all faced with a multitude of choices, from moment to moment, throughout our days, weeks, months, years. I find it incredibly empowering (and yes, sometimes scary!) knowing that I have more influence and control over my destiny than I’d sometimes care to admit.
Children and young people are, in particular, at a stage of their life where they need to feel empowered and supported. Not least of all, to make the choices that will help them to lead the rest of their life the way that they want to.
My drive is to make a positive difference to myself and those around me. By working with Inspire I know that I am able to make a difference to pupils, students, teachers, parents. In turn I hope that they will then go on to make a positive difference to those around them.
